Public Health AmeriCorps Overview

AmeriCorps is the federal agency for national service and volunteerism. AmeriCorps provides opportunities for Americans of all backgrounds to serve their country, address the nation's most pressing challenges, improve lives and communities, and strengthen civic engagement. AmeriCorps and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention joined forces to create Public Health AmeriCorps. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (Public Health) partnered with AmeriCorps to recruit, train, and support the development of the next generation of public health leaders.

  What Is Public Health AmeriCorps?

  Public Health AmeriCorps has two main goals
  1. Address public health needs of local communities and advance more equitable health outcomes for underserved communities.
  2. Create pathways to good quality public health-related careers through onsite experience and training.

  Eligibility Requirements
To serve in this position, applicants must

  1. Be at least 18 years of age or older (no upper age limit)
  2. Be a U.S. citizen, U.S. National, or Lawful Permanent Resident Alien
  3. Have a high school diploma or an equivalency certificate
  4. Be available to complete service hours within 12 months
  5. Complete required National Criminal History and Background Checks (NSCHC). Enrollment in the program is contingent on NSCHC results.

  Position Description

AmeriCorps members engage in community outreach, health education, and resource sharing in the most highly impacted communities located within Los Angeles County. Members are assigned to one of the eight Service Planning Areas (SPAs) in Los Angeles and work to meet the unique health needs of communities within their assigned region.

Members will have the opportunity to:

  1. Conduct in-person outreach
  2. Provide community members with guidance and messaging on COVID-19 education, prevention, and recovery
  3. Support vaccination clinics
  4. Attend community events
  5. Deliver healing-informed educational sessions centered on various public health topics
  1. Offer resource navigation to community members
  2. Support a variety of public health activities assigned by LACDPH Regional Health Offices
  3. Receive individual and group training to further support development as an emerging public health leader
  4. Network and connect with other Public Health AmeriCorps members and peers

Service Planning Areas (SPAs)

Members are assigned locally at one of the eight Service Planning Areas within Los Angeles County. A Service Planning Area, or SPA, is a specific geographic region within Los Angeles County. These distinct regions allow the Department of Public Health to develop and provide more relevant public health and clinical services targeted to the specific health needs of the residents in these different areas.

  • Receive a $16,200 living allowance
  • Receive a Segal Education Award: $3,247
THREE-QUARTER TIME Three-Quarter Time Members:
  • Complete 1200 service hours within 12
    months
  • Receive a $21,600 living allowance
  • Receive a Segal Education Award: $5,546

What can I use the living allowance on?

You can use your living allowance on any expenses that you accrue during your service year.

What is the Segal Education Award and what can it be used for?

After successfully completing your AmeriCorps term of service and enrolling in the National Service Trust, you are eligible to receive the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award. You can use the award to repay qualified student loans and to pay current educational expenses at eligible institutions of higher education and training programs.

  2. Go to: Healthcare Staffing Professionals-Public Health AmeriCorps Member Application and fill out the HSP application
  3. HSP will reach out to schedule an interview
  1. Interview will be hosted by DPH staff members
  2. HSP will contact you to move forward if you are selected for the roll/position
