Asthma Coalition of Los Angeles County
What Is Asthma?
Asthma is a chronic lung condition that causes inflammation and narrowing of the airways, making it difficult to breathe. Symptoms may include coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath.
With the right care, asthma can be managed effectively. This often includes:
- Working with a healthcare provider to create an Asthma Action Plan.
- Taking prescribed controller or rescue medications.
- Avoiding triggers such as smoke, mold, dust, and outdoor air pollution.
- Regular check-ups to monitor symptoms and adjust treatment.
About the Asthma Coalition
The Asthma Coalition of Los Angeles County (ACLAC) is a collaborative network convened by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (DPH). DPH provides leadership, coordination, and data support to bring together community organizations, healthcare providers, schools, and advocates. Together, ACLAC works to reduce the burden of asthma, address disparities, and improve the quality of life for children and families across Los Angeles County.
- Reduce asthma-related illness, hospitalizations, and emergency visits.
- Improve access to quality care, education, and resources.
- Address inequities by focusing on communities most impacted by asthma.
- Promote healthy environments where children and families live, learn, and play.
- Support asthma-friendly policies and practices in schools, healthcare, and housing.
- Expand community education on asthma prevention and management.
- Strengthen partnerships between public health, healthcare systems, and community groups.
